HANNA Winery and Vineyards was founded in 1985 by Dr. Elias S. Hanna, a world-renowned cardiac surgeon who was eager to find a place in Sonoma County to continue farming. He realized his dream with the purchase of 12 acres in the Russian River Valley and has since acquired additional acreage in the Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and the Mayacamas Mountains, for a total of 600 acres.
When we first bought this vineyard in 1985, it was planted in large part to Chardonnay and French Colombard. We found that the red loam soils and warm climate were ideal for the red Bordeaux varieties, so we began planting those instead. Today, we affectionately call this our “Red Ranch,” as it is currently planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Malbec. With its gently sloping blocks and terraced hillsides, this 100-acre vineyard is also home to a tasting room with panoramic views.
Russian River Valley
The Slusser Road vineyard in the heart of the Russian River Valley is home to our award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, as well as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With its cool climate, this 60-acre vineyard is perfect for slow-ripening varieties, giving us lively aromatics and crisp flavors.
The original home of HANNA Winery was also our very first vineyard property, planted to 25 acres of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This vineyard also produces Elias, one of our single-vineyard reserve labels.
Bismark Mountain Vineyard
The jewel in the crown of the HANNA vineyards, Bismark ranch is high in the Sonoma Mayacamas Mountains, with elevations from 1,400-2,600 feet. The high elevations and rocky volcanic soil bring out the character of the fruit on our 67 planted acres, which are devoted to the Bordeaux varieties, Syrah and Zinfandel. With tiny tonnage, the fruit from this vineyard produces inky, powerful wines that age beautifully.
