This season marked a return to near normalcy after the remarkably challenging 2006 vintage. A dry winter and very dry spring were followed by moderate summer. Bud break was early and disease pressure was low. Frost was absent, and as a result we entered summer with very dry ground. We set a large crop at our Slusser Road Vineyard and a moderate crop at our Home Ranch vineyard. A heat spike in August had many predicting an early harvest. Our chardonnay is a slow achiever however, and was not at its golden peak of flavor until October fifth through eighth. Fruit quality was impeccable. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and barrel fermented. Aging was sur lie until July, when the blend was assembled before bottling in August.
