Winemaker, Jeff Hinchliffe, invites all wine connoisseurs to a special tasting experience of HANNA’s 2018 Saint Macaire in Florero during our Pre-Barrel Tasting Event on Friday, March 6th. Indulge in small bites and the chance to get the first taste of our 2018 Reserve Saint Macaire right out of the Terracotta Florero.
Terracotta vessels were used to ferment and age wine as early as 6000 BC. Modern winemaking depends on wood barrels and stainless steel tanks, but HANNA winemaker Jeff Hinchliffe is excited about the possibilities of these historical amphorae. Terracotta naturally draws out red wine tannins, retains the wine’s acidity, and adds coveted minerality. The purity of the fruit is highlighted, without the distraction of oak. Jeff loves the way the Terracotta Florero has softened the tannins of our St. Macaire, and drawn out its dark fruit and savory flavors.
2015 Winemaker Notes
"Opaque with youthful purple hues, our 2015 Reserve Saint Macaire reveals sylvan notes of oak root, sarsaparilla and chanterelle. These are accompanied by aromas of peppercorn, sage leaf, saddle leather and Darjeeling tea. By mouth fruit emerges as kirsch and grilled fig. Texturally the wine is hewn large with supple, unctuous tannins and an unabashed natural brightness."
