Vineyard: Hanna’s 2014 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was grown on our Red Ranch in Alexander Valley. Below Hoot Owl Creek this benchland ranch is planted on Clough Series gravelly loam soil. Above Hoot Owl it planted on Laughlin Series Sandy Loam. These are soils of two foot depth or less. The vineyard is planted to 45 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 acres of Malbec and five acres of Merlot. The Cabernet is planted to clones 7, 2 and 6. Merlot is planted to clone 3. Vine age in our 2014 vintage ranges from four to 24 years.
Vintage 2014: The 2014 growing season was even drier version of 2013, with consistently warm, but never hot temperatures. Despite the early bud break, spring frost was not an issue. The peak summer months were moderate, resulting in steady ripening, fine tannins and intense color and flavor development. Our two young Cab blocks produced their first crop, yielding only one ton per acre, these blocks were harvested on September 11 & 16 at 27.3 and 26.9o Brix. The small Merlot crop, only three tons per acre on the 24-year-old vines, was also harvested on September 16 at 26.6o Brix. The Malbec was harvested on September 20, at 25.0o Brix, the established Cab blocks were harvested from September 20, to October 11, at an average 26.0o Brix.
Winemaking: We hand harvested in the cool hours from midnight to sunrise. The grapes were hand-sorted, destemmed and partially crushed to stainless steel fermentation tanks. Pressing was done to taste, based on daily tastings of the wines after pumpover, with an average of seven days skin contact. The newly pressed wines were racked to tank and allowed to settle before barreling. The wine was racked three times in its first year and once in its second year. Aging was in 100% new 59 gallon barrels from Remond, Boutes, Marcel Cadet and Trust.
Tasting Notes: Our 2014 Alexander Valley Cabernet is opaque plum in the glass with aromas of hot boysenberry pie, graphite, candied persimmon and a hint of incense cedar. In the mouth it is luscious, satiny and vivid with dense, fruit driven flavors of blackberry and plum accompanied by spicy cinnamon and cacao notes. (Tasted 7/6/16)
