Vineyards: Our Elias Chardonnay is made from our estate vineyards in the Russian River Valley. For the 2016 Elias Chardonnay, 89% of the grapes were grown at our Home Ranch, and 11% were grown at our Slusser Road Ranch.

Vintage 2016: Following adequate winter rains, the 2016 growing season began early again as the trend toward warmer winters continues. There was almost no frost pressure and the season progressed without significant weather worries. A single heat spike in July was short lived. August in the RRV got drippy, however, and ripening slowed nicely with some associated Bot pressure. This was followed by a glorious, easy ripening September that allowed the Chardonnay to hang until early October.

Winemaking: The 2016 Elias Chardonnay was hand harvested at dawn and brought to the crush pad by tractor. The grapes were carefully hand sorted and whole cluster pressed into stainless steel tanks to settle. After racking off the heavy grape lees, the Chardonnay was 100% barrel fermented. In the spring of 2017 the best barrels were chosen for Elias and given extended time on lees. The wine was sur lie aged for 17 months, with monthly battonage. The 2016 Elias was fermented and aged in 60% new French and Hungarian oak barrels from Remond and Nadalie.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of Honeysuckle, lemon blossom and cardamom with focused flavors of apple cart, hazelnut and brioche. In the mouth it is rich and concentrated, with a juicy acidity that keeps the wine fresh. (Tasted 6/5/18)
