2017 Hanna Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml
Double Gold - San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition 2021
Vineyard: Hanna’s 2017 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was grown on our Red Ranch in Alexander Valley. Below Hoot Owl Creek this benchland ranch is planted on Clough Series gravelly loam soil. Above Hoot Owl it planted on Laughlin Series Sandy Loam. These are soils of two foot depth or less. The vineyard is planted to 50 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 acres of Malbec, two-and-a-half acres of Merlot, two acres of Petit Verdot, and just over a half acre of Saint Macaire. The Cabernet is planted to clones 7, 2 and 6. The Malbec is clone 9, the Merlot is clone 3, the Petit Verdot is clone 400, and the Saint Macaire is a field selection. Vine age in our 2017 vintage ranges from seven to 27 years.
Vintage 2017: A welcome, very wet winter filled reservoirs. Spring frost was absent. A relatively dry, cool spring led into a summer with alternating cool and very hot periods. Blocks that were blooming during extremes suffered some shatter but overall the crop size was average. A cool, drippy August was followed by a Labor Day heat wave that pushed harvest into high gear. Temperatures then moderated into a glorious, easy ripening September and early October. We harvested the grapes for our Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon between September 27, and October 14, 2017. The Tubbs fire thankfully did not affect our Alexander Valley grapes though it did force the winemakers to evacuate to the safety of the winery.
Winemaking: We began by hand picking, primarily in the cool hours from midnight to sunrise. The grapes were sorted, destemmed and partially crushed to stainless steel fermentation tanks. Draining and pressing was done “to taste,” based on daily tastings of the wines during and after pumpovers. The blend was assembled in early 2018.
Tasting Notes: Our 2017 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon deep hue betrays the presence of its blending partner. Blackberry, leather, clove, and a hint of ripe red Capsicum annuum. Flavors are echoic with the addition of anise hagelsag, black cherry and fresh earth. All four tasters commented on the satin like entry of the tannins which though plump, glide into a graceful finish. (Tasted 6/18/20)
