Vineyard: Our Bismark Mountain vineyard is located in the Mayacamas Mountains in the Moon Mountain District Sonoma County appellation. Two and three-quarter acres were planted in 1993, 9’ by 4’, on very rocky ground. In 2000 we grafted an additional 2676 vines (3.99 acres) to Zinfandel as well as 350 vines to Petite Sirah. In all we have six small blocks of Zinfandel at Bismark.
Vintage 2015: The 2015 growing season was once again dry and odd. Late winter and early spring were hot. Late spring was cool and fruit set was poor. The peak summer months were moderate, resulting in steady ripening and good acid retention. Late summer heat pushed sugar accumulation because of the small crop. We harvested our Bismark Mountain Zin beginning August 21, and finishing on September 5, at an average brix of 32.7. . Winemaking: Our 2015 Bismark Zinfandel was destemmed and cold soaked for in combination of bins and tank. Ageing was sur lie in a combination of custom fired fine grain Q. alba from Nadalie and subsequent ageing in French oak from Trust and Treuil.
Tasting Notes: Polished deep ruby in color with intense aromas of carob, Mexican chocolate and raspberry compote. It is heady and rich by mouth, exuding red fruit and vanilla flavors. (Tasted 11/11/2016).
