2017 Elias Chardonnay 750ml
Vineyards: Our Elias Chardonnay is made from our estate vineyards in the Russian River Valley. The 2017 Elias is made from Chardonnay grown on our Home Ranch. These vines, now 30 years old, are coolly ablaze in red and yellow lichen and producing wines of profound depth.
Vintage 2017: A welcome, very wet winter filled reservoirs. Spring frost was absent. A relatively dry, cool spring led into a summer with alternating cool and very hot periods. Blocks that were blooming during extremes suffered some shatter but overall the crop size was average. A cool foggy August was followed by a Labor Day heat wave that pushed Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot harvest into high gear. This was followed by a glorious, easy ripening September that allowed the Chardonnay to hang into the third week of September. The grapes were harvested on September 22, 2017 at 24.2 Brix, pH 3.23.
Winemaking: The 2017 Elias Chardonnay was hand harvested at dawn and brought to the crush pad by tractor. The grapes were carefully hand sorted and whole cluster pressed into stainless steel tanks to settle. After racking off the heavy grape lees, the Chardonnay was 100% barrel fermented. In the spring of 2018, the best barrels were chosen for Elias and given extended time on lees. The wine was sur lie aged for 17 months, with monthly battonage. The 2017 Elias was fermented and aged in 60% new, French and Hungarian oak barrels from Trust and Remond.
Tasting Notes: Shimmering, youthful, green gold, our 2017 Elias Chard is a tour de force. One is besieged by a gorgeous aromatic gestalt., comprising intense notes of fresh pineapple, freshly churned butter, brined lemon, white nougat and creama volteada. Honey Crisp apple, Bosque pear, orange blossom and a champagne like yeastiness all follow by mouth. Texturally it is at once refreshingly nervy and rich. (Tasted 11-12-19)
