2021 HANNA Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley, 90 POINTS, Wine Enthusiast

2021 HANNA Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley, Double Gold, North Coast Wine Challenge

Vineyards: Hanna’s 2021 Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from a single block from our Slusser Road Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. The soils are primarily Yolo and Cortina gravelly loam, run relatively deep, and require little to no irrigation.

Russian River Valley 2021: Winter 2021 was extremely dry and warm, resulting in an extended bud break and bloom. Crop levels were low in 2021 from a combination of weak spring growth, small clusters, and blustery days. Summer was consistently warm and verasion was early – end of July for many blocks. The grapes for our 2021 Sparkling were harvested the morning of August 16, at an average 18.7 º Brix, TA of 1.45 g/100 mL and pH of 2.9.

Winemaking: Our winemaking begins in the vineyard. We manage the canopies to achieve flavor enhancing filtered light from fruit set on. The grapes were hand harvested at sunrise into slack filled bins, then carefully loaded into the press. The whole clusters were gently pressed, without tumbling, and only the first 110 gallons per ton were collected to become the sparkling cuvée. The juice was inoculated with non-saccharomyces yeast for microbial protection, cold settled, racked, and inoculated with saccharomyces for a long, cool fermentation. On February 4, 2022, the cuvée was tirage bottled and laid into bins to undergo the secondary fermentation and age on the lees. After nine months aging en tirage, Hanna’s 2021 Sparkling was disgorged on November 19, 2022.

Tasting Notes: Aromas uplifted by a net of fine bubbles are of Rangpur lime, matcha, Gravenstein apple, Anjou pear a hint of fresh ginger. Flavors of chamomile, white grapefruit, apricot jam and a hint of carrot greens break across the palate in a scintillating wave.
