2022 Bismark Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml
HANNA Bismark Moon Mountain Cabernet Saucignon 2022 - 95 Points, James Suckling
"This powerful and smooth-textured wine goes very deep in black fruit, very broad in mouthfeel and is well structured in fine-grained tannins. Creme de cassis, dried blueberry, cocoa, graphite and iron flavors expand on the palate and linger in the finish. Drinkable now but best in 2030." - Jim Gordon, Executive Editor James Suckling
Vineyard Source: Our Bismark Mountain Ranch is high above the city of Sonoma and San Pablo Bay. Here on the southwestern flanks of the Mayacamas Mountains we grow 27 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon amid outcroppings of Rhyolite. We began planting in 1991 and continue to fine tune our mix of cultivars to this day. This is steep ground; shared with Creosote bush, grey pine, coyote, and mountain lion. Topographically it is similar to the Douro. Windy, sun drenched yet moderate in temperature, Bismark grudgingly produces grapes with an intense, deeply concentrated flavor.
Bismark Vintage 2022: October 2021 brought an atmospheric river event that recharged the soil profile after several years of drought. This led to an even bud break – later than 2021 - strong early growth and a moderate crop. A Goldilocks summer, until Labor Day that is, resulted in even ripening and an early start to harvest. The slope steepened dramatically over Labor Day, with days of high heat pushing sugar accumulation. Our canopy management technique, which retains most of the protective leaves, proved to be the perfect antidote to the dehydrating heat that damaged fruit in conventionally farmed vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were harvested 9/12/22, and the Malbec for the blend was harvested on 9/7/22.
Winemaking: The grapes were sorted, destemmed and partially crushed to stainless steel fermentation tanks. Pressing was done “to taste,” based on daily tastings of the wines after pumpover. The newly pressed wines were racked to tank and allowed to settle before barreling. The wine was aged on lees for 33 months in 69% new oak barrels coopered by Remond, Bossuet, Colbert, Nadalie and Trust.
Tasting notes: Drenched in opulent cocoa and raspberry reduction, our 2022 Bismark Cabernet hints at its provenance with notes of pennyroyal, white sage and warm stone. By mouth it is a burst of cherry and toast, with a sapid, concentrated, dense texture that dances, frictionless, across the palate. (tasted 6-17-25)
