2022 HANNA Chardonnay 750ml DTC
92 Points Wine Enthusiast: The nose of this deeply golden Chardonnay is dominated by fresh pineapple, papaya and lemon zest. On the palate, some freshness and minerality emerge alongside lime zest, spiced pear and a faint hint of aromatic anise. The finish is linear and acid driven, with great length and precision.
Vineyards: Our Chardonnay is made from our two mature vineyards in the Russian River Valley. The Slusser Ranch was planted in 1992 on Cortina gravelly loam. Although we have irrigation, it is seldom needed. The Home Ranch was planted in 1990 on Wright loam, which sometimes requires irrigation during heat spells.
Russian River Valley 2022: October 2022 brought an atmospheric river event that recharged the soil profile. This led
to an even bud break – later than 2022 - strong early growth and a moderate crop. A Goldilocks summer, until Labor
Day that is, resulted in even ripening and an early start to harvest. The slope steepened dramatically over Labor Day, with days of high heat pushing sugar accumulation. Our canopy management technique, which retains the protective leaves on the afternoon side of the vines, proved to be the perfect antidote to the dehydrating heat that damaged fruit in
conventionally farmed vineyards. We harvested from September 8 to 21, 2022 at an average 24.4o Brix.
Winemaking: Our Chardonnay was hand harvested at night, picked into half-ton bins, and hauled the short distance to
the winery. Once the grapes arrived, we hand-sorted the fruit and whole cluster pressed them while still cold. The juice
was cold settled, allowed to begin fermentation, and then moved to 60-gallon French and European barrels. The wine
was aged in 20% new and 29% six-month-old barrels for six months.
Tasting Notes: Just a few days after bottling we got rafts of Anjou pear, yellow delicious apple and white rose, off the
wall a little later are kumquat, butterscotch, cinnamon and a hint of lilac. By mouth honey crisp apple tart, sweet plantain, lemon curd, and Puerto Rican Papaya jostle deliciously and are conveyed throughout by a bright, luscious, and though hard to believe, absolutely sugarless finish.
